Course Information

In each year students follow 6 Design & Technology course’s that includes the following subjects;

  • Catering
  • Graphics
  • Resistant Materials
  • Textiles

Through these subjects, students learn how to work safely and independently within a workshop and the kitchen environment, developing key knowledge and making a variety of products by manipulating a range of materials. Work done in KS3 consolidates learning and prepares students for KS4 should they wish to continue their design and technology journey.

Year 7Students follow design and make courses in the 4 areas with the following themes Catering; Healthy Start & Lifestyles Graphics; Clock & Maze; Resistant Materials; Bubble gum dispenser and balancing figure; Textiles; Keyring.
Year 8Students follow design and make courses in the 4 areas with the following themes Catering; The Good Life & World Foods; Graphics; Architectural Models; Resistant Materials; Lamp & Mini Monsters; Textiles; Denim Pencil Case.
Year 9Students follow design and make courses in the 4 areas with the following themes Catering; Eating Out & Food for Life; Graphics; Board Games; Resistant Materials; 5 Joint Box; Independent Design and Make Project; Textiles: Reading Cushion.

Extra Curricular Opportunities

The department run several courses and initiatives

  • Involvement in STEM activities
  • Rotary Chef Competition
  • The workshops, food areas and computer rooms are available to use at lunchtimes

Assessment

Students have targets set for them at the beginning of Y7. Each module is 6/7 weeks in duration which is around 12/14 hours study. At the end of each module the students are assessed against a differentiated progress chart that will identify if they are on, above or below their target.

Assessment focusses on research, designing, making and evaluating skills.
