Science Week 09
13/03/2009
National Science and Engineering Week 2009 certainly
went out with a bang at Anthony Gell School, as students donned
earplugs and goggles for an Explosives Demonstration by Science
teacher, Marcus Wesley, ably assisted by sixth-formers Matt Griffiths
and Joe Bowler.
The week started with with Year 7 students getting the chance to get
close-up and friendly with some wonderful mini-beasts. They refused to
be fazed as hissing cockroaches, stick insects, giant snails, hermit
crabs and millipedes crawled over their hands and up their arms.
Largest of the beasts and most popular amongst the students was a
tortoise named Levi. Also, throughout the week Year 8 students took
part in a national webcast lesson on Energy that involved the students
learning about energy resources, the production of electricity and
conducting a survey around the school on our energy usage.
Lunchtimes during the week were filled with engineering challenges set
by different members of the Science Team, with students designing
marble-runs, rockets that flew, hot-air balloons that floated up to the
ceiling and eggs that dropped without breaking!.
Head of Science, Claire Waring was delighted with the students'
response:" We've had lots of fun this week and students have learned a
lot along the way. I am grateful to colleagues and older students who
gave up their lunchtimes to run the activities. We are now looking
forward to celebrating the International Year of Astronomy later in the
year with an Astronomy Day in collaboration with a member of the local
Astronomy club."
